Pediatric anesthesia and pediatric critical care continue to present challenges to anesthesiologists, critical care physicians, and nurse anesthetists. Improved survival of children with pediatric-specific diseases and congenital anomalies has resulted in an ever-increasing population of pediatric patients with complex surgical and medical conditions. This course provides a comprehensive, up-to-date and current review of the most important changes and advances relevant to the practice of pediatric anesthesia and critical care. The program includes a variety of evidence-based lectures, with question and answer sessions, interactive problem-based learning discussions, and workshops on pediatric regional anesthesia techniques, point-of-care ultrasound, acupuncture and professional coaching.
The interactive, hands-on Pediatric Patient Blood Management (pPBM) masterclass will review current evidence-based guidelines for pPBM management, including best-practice guidelines for multimodal strategies to manage the bleeding child: anemia management, benefits and risks of blood transfusion, coagulation factors and blood product alternatives, massive hemorrhage guidelines, point of care testing (viscoelastic testing) and basic blood banking for the pediatric anesthesiologist.
Our mission is to provide information, strategies, and skills for improving care and outcomes for pediatric patients in the operating room, non-operating room locations, and the intensive care unit.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the participants will be able to:
– Describe and apply updated practice guidelines for perioperative pediatric blood management
– Discuss TXA indications and contraindications for pediatric patients
– Design and develop ERAS protocols in various pediatric surgical disciplines
– Relate potential artificial intelligence applications to their own practice of pediatric anesthesia
– Practice emerging ultrasound-guided pediatric regional blocks
– Identify feasibility of pediatric regional blocks in the cardiac OR
– Practice point-of-care ultrasound techniques with hands-on POCUS Workshop
– Discuss current challenges in pediatric anesthesia and critical care in low and middle income countries
– Discuss pediatric pacemaker management perioperatively
– Identify the ethical responsibilities of the anesthesiologist in complex cases
– Recognize implications of various anticoagulation regimens in children
– Assess and manage neonates, infants and children presenting with a challenging airway
– Describe pediatric-specific ASA classification and risk stratification.
– Recognize sustainability efforts to enhance perioperative pediatric safety and outcomes
– Distinguish various ventilator strategies for the neonate
– Describe updates in CDH repair and postoperative ventilator management
– Determine treatment options to effectively manage acute and chronic pediatric pain
– Integrate acupuncture into multi-modal pediatric pain management plans
– Identify strategies for curtailing burnout and mechanisms to develop resilience
