Anesthesiology: Volume 138 (1 – 6)

Anesthesiology is the official Journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The Society was founded in 1936 (although it can trace its origins back to 1904). The Journal published its first issue in July 1940, under the direction of Henry Ruth MD, the first Editor-in-Chief. In the intervening years, its circulation has grown from only 700 to over 38,000, making it the largest journal in our specialty. The Journal receives nearly 1500 manuscript submissions per year, and publishes almost 4000 pages (about 3,000,000 words) of peer-reviewed material annually. Over 50% of the submissions and more than 6000 of its subscribers are from outside the United States, making it a major international publication.
Anesthesiology is widely regarded as the preeminent scientific journal in the specialty. This is evidenced not just by its size and circulation, but by its “Impact Factor”, a number which estimates the number of times the average journal article is quoted by other authors. It is also indexed as a “core” journal by the National Library of Medicine.
