While important advances have been made regarding the incorporation of nutrients necessary for high-risk newborns, there is surprising variability worldwide in neonatal nutritional support in clinical practice, and even among different professionals working in the same neonatal unit. This compendium provides current scientific evidence on the needs and comprehensive nutritional practices of obstetric and neonatal care during hospitalization, which is usually prolonged, and follow-up up to two years, with a focus on the use and handling of human milk as a priority food in the nutritional emergency posed by high-risk newborns. The main objective of this publication is focused on updating and deepening knowledge on all aspects inherent to the nutrition of these patients and on the appropriate use of human milk in them as an essential, possible and indispensable action for the survival and future development of high-risk newborns.
