Each chapter describes the issue, how often it occurs, and the causes of the issue. To assist with the assessment, the book contains physical exam locations as well as diagnostic tests that are likely necessary. The first book to include guidelines for the practice of adult-gerontology in primary care, these guidelines are both useful as a clinical reference and a text for healthcare professionals that work with this population. Concisely and recently, the book has been distinguished by its simple-to read outline that facilitates access to the information that readers need. The second edition contains 27 new entries that are associated with the elderly population, a new section on geriatric syndromes, and multiple updates to the guidelines regarding screenings. Polypharmacy concerns are addressed throughout, and the BEERS list of pharmaceuticals is emphasized in order to assist doctors in safely reducing or supplementing patients’ medication regimens.

For quick and simple access to information, the practice guidelines are primarily organized by body system, disorders are listed in alphabetical order within each body system, and all disorders are presented in a consistent manner. History taking is emphasized in the exam, as well as the aging population’s specific concerns, the more than 240 guidelines on disorders have a definition, incidence, pathogenesis, predisposing factors, common complaints, other symptoms, physical exam, diagnostic tests, differential diagnoses, care plan, health promotion, follow-up guidelines, and tips for consultation or referral. Specifically beneficial features include “Practice Pointers” that highlight the crucial information pertaining to a disease and bold-faced “Alerts.” The final portion of the guidelines is devoted to the teaching of the most important information for a disorder. Other procedures that are commonly employed in office or medical settings are included in this collection and are composed of 140 Patient Teaching Guides that are available online.
