1. Overview
This is a primary care medical conference organized by Medical Education Resources (MER), a non-profit organization. The conference is titled “Internal Medicine for Primary Care: Men’s Urology/Neurology/Podiatry/Pulmonology”. It will take place from May 24-28, 2026, at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kaanapali in Maui, HI.

Design treatment strategies reflective of current evidence-based medicine for common respiratory infections.
Describe the current therapeutic management of COPD.
Discuss diagnosis and screening strategies as well as treatment plans for lung nodules and lung cancer.
Diagnose deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and discuss appropriate therapeutic options.
Discuss medical management of male sexual health.
Discuss the biology, screening, and treatment options of prostate cancer.
Evaluate and manage sexually-transmitted infections in men.
Differentiate between benign prostate conditions and prostate cancers.
Discuss the biology and screening, and treatment options of prostate and testicular cancer.
Recognize and diagnose common foot and ankle pathologies as they present in the primary care setting.
Diagnose and manage ankle injuries and identify when referral is appropriate.
Recognize achilles tendinitis and recommend appropriate treatment.
Discuss technologies used to treat acute and chronic plantar fasciitis.
Discuss causes, prevention and treatment of foot and ankle stress fractures.
Utilize history and physical examination to distinguish weakness from non-specific symptoms.
Discuss evidence-based management options for Alzheimer’s disease.
Evaluate weakness and recognize cardinal features of Parkinson’s disease as well as other movement disorders.
Describe the differential diagnosis of headaches and migraines.
Utilize prevention and treatment strategies for cerebrovascular disorders.
3. Target Audience
This program is targeted to office-based primary care providers and other health professionals with updates in primary care medicine.
Best for internists, primary care physicians, urologists, neurologists, podiatrists, and pulmonologists.
4. Topics
Sunday, May 24, 2026
Pulmonology – Asthma: The medical impact of asthma; fundamental role of inflammation, with possible scarring and irreversible loss of lung function; practical points of diagnosis; goal setting management based on levels of severity; risk factors for mortality and treatment in the acute setting; management options for the difficult to control asthmatic patient.
Pulmonology – Controversies in the Treatment of Common Respiratory Infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis; pneumonia (community versus hospital-acquired); role of the Pneumonia Severity Index score in determining indication for hospitalization; cost-effective use of antibiotics; clinical significance of drug resistance; guidelines for management.
Pulmonology – COPD: Definition; pathophysiology; early detection and intervention; risk reduction; management update including new modalities (including lung volume reduction surgery) and the role of inhaled corticosteroids and domiciliary oxygen.
Monday, May 25, 2026
Men’s Urology – Androgen Replacement and Sexual Function: Treatment algorithm and safety profiles for the treatment of erectile dysfunction; testosterone supplementation for the treatment of ED or hypogonadism.
Men’s Urology – Prostate Cancer Screening and Treatment: Review and clarification of the often confusing and political literature regarding prostate cancer screening, risks, and benefits of screening for prostate cancer and strategies for decreasing the risk of over treatment.
Men’s Urology – Sexually Transmitted Infections in Men: Presenting symptoms, lesions, latencies, diagnostic work-ups and therapies of the common sexually transmitted diseases.
Pulmonology – Lung Cancer Screening & Pulmonary Nodules: Appropriate use of the new lung cancer screening recommendations; Fleischner Society guidelines and American College of Chest Physician Lung Cancer guidelines; approach to definitive evaluation and management strategies.
Pulmonology – Deep Vein Thrombosis & Pulmonary Embolism: Clinical presentation: The great masquerader; diagnostic controversies; acute treatment; chronic therapy and complications; ACCP Guidelines.
Tuesday, May 26, 2026
Podiatry – Common Foot and Ankle Pathologies Seen in Primary Care: Gain a familiarity and confidence to recognize common foot and ankle pathologies in the clinical setting and gain better knowledge of treatment options; Differential diagnoses and understanding of when to send patients to a specialist; Common pathologies include: Morton’s neuromas, bunions, flatfoot deformities, capsulitis, hammertoes, etc.; Determining which patients need further diagnostic imaging and surgical intervention.
Podiatry – Ankle Sprains: Session will explore those injuries which present to the primary care office that can easily be managed, those that require additional diagnostics, and the tricky injuries that may need referral.
Podiatry – Achilles Tendinitis: The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body, yet it is highly susceptible to injury. Achilles tendon injuries account for the third most common injury to the lower extremity after the ankle sprain and plantar fasciitis. This lecture will explore the causes of Achilles tendon conditions and their treatment. A differentiation between insertional and non-insertional tendonitis is critical for proper treatment. A multitude of new modalities which are available for the primary care provider to effectively treat and prevent Achilles tendon injuries will be discussed.
Men’s Urology – Benign Male Genitourinary Conditions: Appropriate primary medical management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) (also known as BPH) as well as identification of patients with complex or refractory cases that warrant referral; diagnosis and treatment of epididymitis, testicular pain, prostatitis and other benign findings.
Men’s Urology – Male Malignancies (Prostate & Testicular): Biology and treatment options using current medical technology of prostate cancer; evaluation and treatment of testicular cancer and long-term ramifications after cure.
Wednesday, May 27, 2026
Neurology – Evaluating Weakness: Using the history and physical examination to distinguish weakness from non-specific symptoms; characteristics of neurological diseases that produce weakness; presentations of representative diseases of the nervous system.
Neurology – Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias: Definition; statistics; neurological changes of normal aging; pathology; etiological theories; vascular dementias; investigations; social issues; symptomatic treatment; research therapies.
Neurology – Parkinson’s Disease & Other Movement Disorders: Epidemiology; cardinal features; secondary features; pathology; neurochemistry; differential diagnosis; treatment; complication; other movement disorders; neuroleptic-induced movement disorders; chorea.
Podiatry – Plantar Fasciitis: Session will discuss the causes and prevention of this common problem and discuss new and exciting technologies used to treat the acute and chronic forms of this condition.
Podiatry – Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle: So common, yet often missed or mistreated. Session will discuss causes and prevention, treatment, and evidence based medicine for foot and ankle stress fractures seen in the primary care setting.
Thursday, May 28, 2026
