The human brain is composed of numerous neurons that communicate with each other via chemical signals, these signals are referred to as neuroactive substances. These chemical substances with neuroactive properties include neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and neurohormones. Other neurotransmitters also function as neuromodulators and neurohormones. It’s unlikely that there would ever be a consensus about the definitions of these substances that are neurohormones, including neurotransmitters, as the term ‘neurotransmitter’ is traditionally used very imprecisely. Other than the numerous complex interactions between neurons, the central nervous system is also diverse in its composition of neurotransmitters, as opposed to the autonomic nervous system, which is primarily composed of parasympathetic neurons, the sympathetic system is primarily composed of neurons that communicate with the external world, and the brain is primarily composed of neurons that communicate with other neurons. There are over 20 different neurotransmitter systems and multiple receptors for each system. Any alterations to the chemical balance of neurotransmitters are manifested as neurological or psychiatric issues such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, psychosis, depression, etc. Acetylcholine, noradrenaline, dopamine, and 5-HT are all of the utmost importance in the chemical composition of neurotransmitters for their significant role in the development of various neurological and psychiatric disorders in humans. However, the participation of various proteins and peptides, including neurotrophic factors, growth factors, and endogenous chemicals, cannot be disregarded.

Every day, the suffering of individuals due to a neurotransmitter imbalance is increasing. Various causes, including stress, diet, genetics, and toxins like alcohol and nicotine, have an effect on this imbalance. This imbalance may cause mental health issues. The primary objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive description of the neurological diseases associated with chemical imbalances in the brain.
