By Andrew J Fuglevand
This introductory textbook explores how the brain and spinal cord controls movements. It is directed toward senior undergraduates and early-stage graduate/clinical students in movement sciences, physiology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, physical therapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation sciences, and speech sciences. The book begins by outlining fundamentals of cellular neurophysiology in a conceptual, accessible way. It also delves into basic principles of sensory processing, using the somatosensory system as a model system and as a critical element in movement control. The motor system proper is detailed beginning in the periphery (with the motor unit) and working toward motor areas in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. The functions these regions play are described in the context of three broad categories of movement: reflexes, rhythmical behaviors, and voluntary movements. Various disorders of the nervous system affecting movement are also described and some approaches applied to treat these disorders are outlined.
