Studies have demonstrated that low health literacy (HL) is associated with poor mental and physical health, increased health disparities and less effective healthcare systems. The results from HL in Europe indicate that approximately half of the respondents in eight member states of the European Union had limited HL. Reasons for this include demographic changes, social issues, health-related concerns and economic factors that need to be considered in order to understand why policy makers and healthcare managers should concern themselves with health literacy.
