Since the introduction of minimally invasive video-assisted surgery, many technical aids have been developed that enable us to perform laparoscopic or thoracoscopic operations today. The modern standard of video systems is a monocular optic with state-of-the-art chips that deliver high-definition HD image quality. However, it is now also possible to integrate two optics into a 10mm instrument, generating a binocular true 3D image. It is expected that 3D video technology will trigger a new development leap for minimally invasive surgery. It is now up to the surgeons to take advantage of this option.
