The human brain is composed of Billions of neurons that communicate with each other via chemical signals, these chemicals are referred to as neuroactive substances. These chemical substances that are neuractive include neurotransmitters, regulators of consciousness, and hormones. Other neurotransmitters have also been observed to function as neuromodulators and neurohormones. No universal agreement exists about the exact definitions of these neuroactive substances, including neurotransmitters, as the term ‘neurotransmitter’ is typically used to describe neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and neuromodulators. Any deviation from the normal procedure of these substances can lead to diseases.

The brain is responsible for controlling the neurological and behavioral processes of the body, it also facilitates communication between neurons via various chemical compounds. Psychological and neurological disorders are often caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. With numerous neurons involved, the central nervous system is a large organization that contains numerous neurotransmitter systems. On the other hand, the autonomic nervous system is primarily composed of the parasympathetic system which functions to provide rest and digestion, as well as the sympathetic system which is involved in the fight or flight response. Over 20 different neurotransmitter systems are involved, each system has multiple receptors. Neurochemical imbalances are manifested as either neurological or psychiatric disorders, such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, psychosis, and depression.
