“Cancer Uterine Cervix & The Bethesda System” is amulti author book which discusses Cervical Cancer in itsentirety. When the work of this book began almost sevenyears back, the plan was to put together a practical compactformat of a handbook of cervical cytology whichwould be useful in the diagnostic work at the microscope.The aim was to focus mainly on the description oflesions, along with carefully selected illustrations, that acytopathologist was likely to need in routine practice. Asthe contents progressed, there was an irresistible incentiveto cover along with cytology, descriptions of histopathologicfindings too. Having quick and easy referencematerial of histopathologic basis of cytology would be avery logical content of any handbook. This inevitably ledto an expansion of text and illustrations to include methodof collection of Pap smear and screening technologiesfor cervical cancer with helpful feature of algorithmsclearly intended to lead the way to standard follow up ofwomen screened. Basics of Colposcopic findings in precancerouslesions of the cervix, that have bearing in thecompletion of the knowledge and workup of patients,have also been incorporated. As a result, the hand bookhas taken on the presentation of a textbook while stillretaining the configuration of an Atlas because of itsinnumerable illustrations that have resulted in worthwhileincreased coverage and usefulnessNew trends in the practice of gynecologic cytologyhave emerged. Therefore, a chapter of ancillary techniques,in particular immunocytochemistry using theLBC smears was added. We have tried to satisfy theneeds of the cytotechnicians within the set frameworkand format of any handbook by adding the chapters onlaboratory aspects that describe automation of cervicalcytology and method of Papanicolaou staining and itsnuances. This will ensure a wider range of receivers ofthis book like the cytotechnologists and pathologistsin general. For this reason alone, it deserves a place inthe long history of development of meaningful cytopathologicliterature in the field of cervical cancer.
